The University of Ulster (UU) continues to be a leading contributor of lifelong learning, research, and knowledge and technology transfer in Northern Ireland . Based on student applications, UU is placed in the top ten of the UK 's most popular universities (current enrolment over 28,500 students). This reinforces the UU's position as the largest University in Ireland . UU has doubled their world-class research capability with two five-star performances (one of them Biomedical Sciences) in the recent national Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). New research Centres of Excellence include the Centre of Molecular Biosciences (€ ~20m) (opened in 2002), the Centre for Functional Genomics (€ 6m), the Centre for Software Process Technology (€ 2.3m), and the Centre for Nanotechnology (€ 16.5m).
